FAQ about Year to Date AMA Membership

The AMA is changing to year-to-date membership renewals. Here are some frequently asked questions about how this will effect you and your club. Year to Date Membership FAQs June 29, 2015 What Is The Definition of a Year-to-Date Membership? Year-to-date membership refers to the beginning date a member joins with the expiration date being one year later. If a member joins in October their membership will expire the end of October the following year. How Does Year-to-Date Affect Current Members? If current members renew prior to their current expiration date of December 31, 2015 their membership will continue to expire on December 31, 2016. If a current member lets their membership expire on December 31, 2015 and they renew any time after December 31, 2015 their membership year will begin whenever they renew. For example: Renewed January 20, 2016 their membership would expire January 31, 2017. How Does Year-to-Date Affect New Members Joining AMA?   Beginning September 15, 2015 any new members joining AMA their membership will expire one year from their join date. For example: If a new member joins October 15, 2015 their expiration date will be October 31, 2016. How Will Members Be Notified of Their Expiration Date? Each member’s expiration date will be printed on their membership card. Sixty (60) days out from a member’s expiration date, they will begin receiving notification via email and/or mail their membership will soon expire and to renew. Open membership will be $75 and a Senior membership will be $65. There will be an opportunity for you to lock-in your current dues of $58 or $48 for one year or two years. Please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions and article by Keith Sessions, AMA Chief Financial Officer that will appear in the July issue of Model Aviation. Frequently Asked Questions Why is AMA raising dues? AMA last raised dues in 2003, so it will have been 13 years since our last dues adjustment. The Executive Council did not make this decision lightly. It has been discussed at length for at least the last nine months. We probably should have raised dues several years ago. We held off because of what was an unfavorable economic climate, and we felt we could sustain operations in the interim until that climate improved. We reached a point where this decision had to be made. The Executive Committee was unanimous in its decision. Why this amount and increase now? Running an organization with 2016 needs on a 2003 revenue stream would restrict its effectiveness. The AMA’s role and responsibilities have dramatically changed in that time. AMA’s last dues increase was in 2003 from $48 to $58. Before that, the dues increased in 1997 from $42 to $48. The increase of the Open membership from $58 to $75 is an expense and inflationary adjustment. It amounts to $17 per year or just $1.42 a month. The Park Pilot membership was launched in 2008...

AMA member Juan Pablo Montoya won his second Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 24. His first Indy 500 victory came in 2000 when he was a rookie driver. Early in this year’s Indy 500, another driver crashed into the back of Juan’s car, dropping him to last among the 30 cars still running. He managed to squeak back to the front of the pack—passing his teammate Will Power with three laps to go to win his second career Indy 500. AMA would like to congratulate Juan on his victory. Join the Academy of Model Aeronautics Foundation in celebrating model aviation for the third annual National Model Aviation Day, August 15, 2015. National Model Aviation Day was created to encourage clubs to celebrate the hobby and share it with the public. Our chartered clubs have also been asked to conduct a fundraiser to provide assistance to a worthy cause. For the third year in a row, all club efforts will support the Wounded Warrior Project.
